How is it calculated?
Weight is cross-sectional area × length × density. With sizes in millimetres, the factors below give the weight of one metre in kilograms directly.
| Section | Size | Weight per metre (kg) | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | d | d² × 0.006165 | Ø 50 → 15.41 kg/m |
| Square | a | a² × 0.00785 | 40 × 40 → 12.56 kg/m |
| Flat / Slab | a × b | a × b × 0.00785 | 100 × 20 → 15.70 kg/m |
| Hexagon | s (across flats) | s² × 0.0068 | SW 36 → 8.81 kg/m |
| Tube | D, t | (D − t) × t × 0.02466 | 88.9 × 5 → 10.35 kg/m |
| Plate / Sheet | t | t × 7.85 (kg/m²) | 10 mm → 78.5 kg/m² |
The factors are for steel (7.85 g/cm³). For another material, multiply the steel weight by its density factor.
