How to calculate steel weight: formulas and examples
Weight = cross-section × length × density. With this one rule you can find the weight per metre of any section; here are the formulas and worked examples.
Read Material SelectionHow to choose a steel grade: 6 grade groups and their uses
The right steel is chosen by looking at the load, wear, manufacturing route and heat treatment of the part together. Here are the six main grade groups and how their names are read.

One gives a hard case over a tough core, the other balanced strength throughout the section. From gears to axles, we compare which steel to choose for which part.

How do I get a quote?
The fastest way is WhatsApp: +90 539 304 88 06. You can also call +90 539 825 40 44, email info@olcaymetal.com.tr or fill in the form on our contact page.
What information should I send for a steel quote?
Grade (e.g. C45, 42CrMo4), product form and size (round Ø, flat a × b…), length, quantity (pieces or tonnes) and delivery location. The clearer the information, the faster we can reply.
What size range do you supply in hot-rolled steel?
We supply hot-rolled rounds in Ø 15–340 mm, squares in 10×10 – 300×300 mm, flats and slabs in 20×5 – 1500×300 mm and hexagons in 19–80 mm. Forged rounds go up to Ø 190–1200 mm, forged squares to 200×200 – 800×800 mm and forged flats to 200×100 – 1000×500 mm.
How can I calculate the weight of steel?
With our weight calculator you can see the weight per metre and the total tonnage for round, square, flat, hexagon, tube and plate instantly. For example, one metre of round bar weighs d² × 0.006165 kg (d in mm). We explain the calculation step by step in this article.
